The Five Elements
Long before atoms were named, Chinese sages described the universe as a living dance of five forces. They saw these forces in the turning of seasons, in the human body, in emotion — and in the stones beneath their feet.
The Cosmology
In the Warring States period, around 300 BCE, the philosopher Zou Yan proposed that all reality emerges from the interplay of five phases: Metal (金) and Wood (木) and Water (水) and Fire (火) and Earth (土).
These are not literal substances but movements of energy — Wood rises, Fire flares, Earth stabilizes, Metal condenses, Water flows. In a healthy life, all five are present in harmony. When one is missing or weak, imbalance follows.
The Ba Zi (Eight Character) chart maps the exact arrangement of these elements at the moment of your birth, using the Chinese calendar’s Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. For two millennia, this system has guided everything from medicine to marriage to statecraft.

The Force of Structure & Clarity
Metal is the blade, the coin, the breath of autumn. It governs structure, discipline, and the cutting away of what no longer serves. When balanced, Metal people are focused, fair, and resolute. When deficient, they may feel scattered or unable to set boundaries.

The Cycles
Generating Cycle
Each element feeds the next in a circle of creation:
Wood feeds Fire → Fire makes Earth (ash) → Earth bears Metal → Metal carries Water → Water nourishes Wood.
Controlling Cycle
Each element also holds another in balance:
Too much of one element can suppress another — which is why balance is the goal of crystal therapy.
